What is the minimum stay?

There is a two night minimum stay at Duchas and usually three nights across the weekend.

Is Duchas suitable for groups?

Our cabin is curated as a retreat for two people; it's a secluded site that gives you the opportunity to completely switch off and reconnect with nature. It's not designed for groups.

Yes — even pups need to switch off. Add your dog at checkout for €40, which covers extra cleaning. We just ask that dogs be kept on a lead around the grounds so as not to disturb the wildlife.

Where is the closest shop?

We would advise stocking up on everything you need before you arrive so you can enjoy your stay at the cabin. There are grocery stores in Ballina (a large town with plenty of options, Lidle, Tesco, Dunes Stores), which is a 20-minute drive from the cabin. You also have Crossmonlina, which is a much smaller town with two small grocery stores. If you just need to pick up some essentials, this is your best option.

What kitchen facilities do you have?

The kitchen is kitted out with two gas rings and all the pots and pans you will need. There is a whistle kettle for your boiled water. We have a 200l fridge run off solar power to keep all your food cool (No freezer). Salt, pepper, oil, tea, coffee & sugar are all supplied.

An off grid cabin for two on the banks of the Owenmore river in North Mayo, hidden inside a mature native woodland on an old Irish estate. Hidden on the edge of a walled garden, Duchas is tucked into nature so you feel totally immersed Two-hundred-year-old beech trees stand over the water, and the birdsong barely stops — from the Goldcrest, Ireland's smallest bird, to the clatter of a pheasant taking off. The land carries its history openly: ring forts, standing stones and megalithic tombs sit in the woods around you. Inside, the cabin is built to sit quietly in all of this. There's a private wood-fired sauna and a cold plunge on the decking by the river, a king-size bed, a hot shower, and a small kitchen that runs on solar power. It's a two-night-minimum stay, secluded enough that you're unlikely to meet anyone else and designed for people who want feel deeply immersed into Irish nature and history.

Duchas - The offgrid cabin in the west of Ireland draped in celtic charm

Who is Duchas for?

Duchas is for couples, friends and solo travellers who want real time in Irish nature and the country's ancient past. It sleeps two, it's genuinely secluded, and the pull of the place is the woodland, the river and the Celtic history layered through the land around it — ring forts, tombs and a 6,000-year-old landscape a short walk or drive away. It's a proper West of Ireland stay, not a quick hop from the city: about 2 hours 15 from Galway (105km) and 3 hours 30 from Dublin (250km). That distance is the point — you end up somewhere that still feels remote. Things to note: There's a 200m walk from the car park down a pebble path to the cabin (a wheelbarrow is provided for your bags). The cabin is deep in nature, so you'll hear wind, rain and wildlife around you. Phone signal is limited — you can make and take calls, but data is patchy, so it's worth downloading directions before you set off.

What’s there to do?

You're in North Mayo, between Ireland's first designated wilderness area and the wild Atlantic coast, with some of the rawest walking and oldest history in the country on your doorstep. Wild Nephin National Park — Ireland's first wilderness area, home to some of Mayo's highest peaks — is about 30 minutes away, as is Dún Briste, the 45-metre sea stack marooned off Downpatrick Head since a storm in 1393. Closer to home, the native woodland along the Owenmore river is yours to wander:
